If you’re here, you’re probably looking to paint the exterior of your home. In your research, you’ve likely come across the term “sheen.” In our last blog, we talked all about interior sheen and how to choose the right one for your space. Exterior paint sheen is an equally important factor—It can make all the difference in durability and look of the paint job. But what exactly is exterior paint sheen?

How to select the correct sheen for painting the exterior of your house

In a nutshell, exterior sheen is the level of gloss in the paint. The higher the sheen, the more reflective the surface will be. You’ll often hear exterior sheen referred to as “gloss” or “luster.” The level of sheen you choose typically depends on the material you’re painting. For example, you’ll want to use a high-gloss paint on metal surfaces like door frames and window trim. On the other hand, a low-luster, matte paint is best for wood and stucco surfaces. There are a few different types of sheens that you should consider when it comes to exterior painting. The most common are flat, satin, and gloss. Some products, however, do come in Eggshell or Semi-Gloss.

  • Flat paint has very little sheen and is great for hiding imperfections on walls. It’s not really our first choice for outdoor use as it can easily become dirty and will require frequent repainting.
  • Eggshell paint has a very subtle sheen that is perfect for walls that get cleaned from time to time. It’s also a pretty popular choice for trim and shutters. This sheen is only available in a few exterior products.
  • Satin paint is a step up from eggshell, with more sheen and more durability. It’s a good choice for wood surfaces, like doors and shutters, and can even be used on metal surfaces.
  • Semi-gloss paint has a lot of sheen and is great for areas that need to be scrubbed frequently. It’s not available in all products, but it’s a good choice for wood and metal surfaces that need to stand up to the elements.
  • Gloss paint has the most sheen and is used mainly on metal surfaces. It’s the best choice for areas that are wiped down often, like window frames and door trim.

For the most part, the type of sheen you’ll use depends on what exactly you’re painting. While that doesn’t mean you have to use certain sheens on certain materials, it’s important to not go too sheen-crazy. After all, a little bit of sheen can go a long way in making your home look great!
